Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the change patterns of sleep during the first two cycles of breast cancer chemotherapy.
Method: The design of this study was a longitudinal descriptive study. The subjects of this study were 14 women who were receiving chemotherapy with AC(Adriamycin, Cytoxan) or AMF(Adriamycin, Mitotoxin, 5-Fluorourasil) after surgery for stage I or II/III breast cancer. The data were collected from September 1, 2001 to March 30, 2002. Sleepness Scale was used to collect data; two compassed three days at the time of chemotherapy treatments 1 and 2, and two encompassed three days at cycle 1 and 2 midpoint.
Result: Total sleepness scores were significantly different over time, with scores lower at first treatments and increasing after that. The data revealed some particular individual types of sleep patterns named ¢¥increasing pattern¢¥, ¢¥Roller-Coaster pattern¢¥, ¢¥Reverse roller-coster pattern¢¥ and ¢¥decreasing pattern during first treatment and second midpoint¢¥.
Conclusion: This study provides knowledge to assist in development of scientifically based interventions to modify sleep related to chemotherapy treatment patterns.
